Happy New Year From Sierra Leone!

Happy New Year to all my family, friends, business associates and all who visit this site! May all your dreams be fulfilled this year, 2011.

I can’t believe 2010 has already passed. Boy how time flies. It seems like I just blinked and it’s gone!

Here in Sierra Leone, it’s been an ALL night party and MONSTER traffic…ARRRGHHHH. Boy it took as more than 1 hour from Atlantic Bar to Lumley roundabout last night! As I write this morning, Lumley is quieter in contrast to the party revelry that carried on till the early hours of this morning! Boy people know how to party and the beach does offer the perfect setting!

Electricity Situation December 2010

This year has been a year of MUCH, much better light here in Freetown. Now put together we’ve had light on about 300 days  so far even before the year completes. For some it  has been better others worse depends on where you live.

Most of the problem with light has happened towards the end of  this year when the road works began. As I write, some areas close to Wilkinson Road and Congo Cross have not had light for 6 weeks or more now as the old electric poles are being relocated.

Sierra Leone Up In The Peaceful Index

It’s official Sierra Leone is moving up in the world index of peaceful countries. Sierra Leone is No. 53rd out of 149 countries.

New Zealand tops the list as the most peaceful countries. In Africa only 7 countries are more peaceful than Sierra Leone! And they are(in order of most peaceful): Botswana, Tunisia, Mozambique,Ghana, Egypt, Zambia and Malawi.  I’m particularly proud of this fact as the war was not too long ago.

Check the Global Peace Index 2010 here

And also for me, I can walk the streets at night without feeling afraid as well as if your car broke down in the middle of no where, there will always be people to help!  For me that’s what matters.

Bravo Mama Salone! More good news coming……

Wilkinson Road Being Rebuilt!

Plenty of excitement in the air as all over the country in Sierra Leone, new roads are being constructed and old ones rebuilt and widened. It’s been about a month now wilkoct2010006 since the tractors made appearance on Wilkinson Road – one or the 2 main arteries from the West of Freetown into town centre.

The plan is to have dual carriage way on both sides which has meant a lot of pain and adjustment by those conducting business and living there.

All properties with walls or buildings encroaching the road have been demolished which means people have lost their walls and worse still their land. Small consolation though- I heard

My Encounter At PZ Market

Yesterday, I went to do some frantic shopping at PZ – something I do once a week – and I found this really young boy who wanted me to buy “plastic” ( carrier bag ) from him. No problem, do that all the time but this one was particularly young – perhaps 8 not more than 10 -  and really should be at school. So I told him, I’ll buy 2 bags from him and continued my shopping placing it in the bags.

When I finished, I asked him how much each bag was and he said Le2,500! I was shocked, as I normally buy those type of bags for Le1,500. I couldn’t believe a boy so young could lie with such a straight innocent face.  I mean if he’s starting at this age, can you imagine what a veteran lier and thief (goes hand-in-hand) he’ll be by the time he’s grown up?

Very Good Electricity Situation – August 2010!

Well, it’s been a while but I’ve been super busy! Anyway this is just a quick update. Salone na swit! The electricity – I don’t know if it’s Bumbuna has been CONStannntttt  since June. May was terrible but since then it’s been great 24 hours non-stop more or less. The few times we suffer blackouts, it lasts not more than an hour!

Occasionally, (about 3x now) it’s gone off the whole night. Gradually, it’s becoming a non-issue. What will be great is if the wattage/power is boosted in the evening so that I can use the microwave! I look forward to that… Rome wasn’t built in a day..

The Salone Republic is up and coming… very soon there’ll be more progress, better roads, more businesses, ha ha ha… Na swit salone indeed…
