Southern Eye Clinic Restores Vision

Despite the poor road network leading to Serabu Town in the Bumpeh Chiefdom, Bo District, yet people from all over Sierra Leone, Guinea, Liberia and even Mali brave it to ensure that they receive proper free eye treatment at the Southern Eye Clinic.

The Center provides eye testing, visual acuity, minor surgical procedures, cataract surgery and these are all provided for free.

Dr. Cathy Schanzer Medical Director from Memphis, United States disclosed that they started operations in 2006 after the Center was officially opened by Emeritus Bishop Ganda.

The Director explained that they normally come to do surgery every six months and that during their stay they do cataract surgery on about 200 patients and over 1,000 for other cases and these people come from all over Sierra Leone, Guinea, Liberia and Mali.

Sierra Leone: Africa’s New Investment Destination

That was the theme for this year’s trade and investment forum which happened  on the 16th and 17th of November. SLEIPA's Evening Dinner - The President

I was very excited to blog about this and quite frankly, I wish I had done so just when it happened because since then there’s been an Aljezeera corruption scandal about Sierra Leone investors being allegedly duped in high places and really it’s dampened my spirits a bit. I mean its bad PR for Sierra Leone.

Anyway, I will leave that behind and share the positives as well as the opportunities available. Oh and there are plenty for the savvy investor…. Here are some bullet points which stuck in my mind: Read the rest of this entry »

Hilton Coming To Sierra Leone And Several Other Good Things…

When I got on the plane recently to come to Freetown, I was surprised (or not really) about the number of foreign (by the way, I’m not foreign  ) people coming to Freetown too! Wow so what were all these people coming to do seeing (as some people think) Mama Salone is down and out? hilton hotel in Sierra Leone

My dear  friends (Sierra Leone diaspora in particular),  you will be surprised to know that Africa including Sierra Leone, is the new frontier, the new gold rush, the place where you invest $1 you make $10 or more, (of course subject to applying some wisdom and money and hard work) these people know it and they are coming for their share. How about you?

Don’t let those miserable pictures they show on CNN kid you. While you are “sleeping” abroad people are “chopping” in Sierra Leone.

I mean the weather is fantastic, the beaches are from heaven – really some of them are so remote and unspoilt, you simply gasp when you arrive there. Ahh how I wish Salone will be marketed more! (may be I should be given the job hah hah  ) I mean I see some of these drab countries (no names mentioned) making a meal of so little on CNN.Then I think imagine Sierra Leone being put on CNN?

Any back from my reverie, Hilton in Sierra Leone ….Yes the once dilapidated Cape Sierra is being redeveloped into Hilton and all being well, it should be ready by 2013. The president  “turned the soil” or opened the project about 2 or 3 weeks ago (that shows how busy I am not blogging about it then).

Potable Water In Port Loko, Sierra Leone

Progress is happening all over although I must say the rains have slowed things down, even the completion of Wilkinson Road has been halted.

With the advent of September, hopefully the rain will dissipate and I hope to bring you more good news    of the development happening all over.

For this story, the water works plant is 85% completed and trenches have been dug in which the pipes carrying the water will be laid. There are also efforts to improve on the road networks in the area. And it doesn’t end there…. the Port Loko Council has awarded 40 scholarships to students attending colleges and polytechnics

Today, I feel excited simply because it’s a new month and I’m looking forward to good things happening…. ciao

Bumbuna Operational? Where’s The Light?

Hello again, I’ve been busy and mad! Mad with the lack of light that’s plaguing Freetown again. I remember last year this time when – we Freetownians – were all basking in the new found Bumbuna light and praising the government for doing the unprecedented. Children danced in the street – “Light don come” or something to that effect. Music blared around every street corner and there was a general positivity about progress in Sierra Leone. I will boast to our diaspora friends about how good things are happening….

One Year On….

Fast forward one year on and we’re back the darkness that prevailed when we came in 2008 not to mention the noisome generators. This started – for those of us that live in Lumley – in about February and it became so bad that around the 1st of May there was a big brouhaha as the fuel price was increased from Le17,500 per gallon to Le22,000 or so. In addition to this increase, fuel is now sold in litres instead of gallons.

There were queues at petrol stations as dealers refused to sell for one reason or the other. In the absence of electricity, the only reliable source of light is the generator which needs fuel. Fuel price increase is bad enough but scarcity compounds the problem.

Now I can say, fuel shortages only lasted for about 3 days at the beginning of May, now we do have more expensive fuel but no electricity.

There may be a myriad of reasons why and I’ve seen and heard as well as read Minister this or that say this or that…. quite frankly it doesn’t matter.

Bottom line is unless there’s 24/7 light no economy can grow to it’s fullest potential . Poverty will still be endemic and businesses will charge and arm and a leg for goods and services.

As I’m writing my generator is on… I wonder when I’ll switch it off for good….

How Wilkinson Road Looks Now

The ongoing roadworks on Wilkinson Road in Freetown as well as the Lumley area is fast improving and I must say, I like the way CSE especially is undertaking the project. There’s no doubt they are doing quality work with some major
Sections of road tarred overhauling and complete digging and resurfacing of the road. There’re no more roundabouts at Lumley although, I’m sure by the time they’re finished there will be something there to prevent predictable traffic chaos.

As for Wilkinson Road, I’m a bit hesitant to vouch the quality(different company) from what I’ve seen so far but in the end only time will tell. The rains have started already and if there’s anyway of proving quality, the Freetown rains will lay bare any shoddy work that has been done. For that matter it’s a wait and see.
