Can You Live On $1400 A Month In Sierra Leone?

This is a question posed by one of my visitors and to answer “YES” directly will be difficult as we all have different tastes and needs as well as creature comforts which we may see as a necessity.

To give some perspective - $1400 a month is much more than what 90% of the population earns so straight away you’ll be in the top tier of income earners.

I mean, doctors recently got an upgrade to $600 / month (from $200/month) and Nurses to $200 / month (from $50 / month! I know SHOCKING!!!

Sierra Leonean’s Coming Back…How About You?

It’s been a while since I posted mainly because I’ve been so busy! Anyway, yesterday was double celebration for me - firstly, we welcomed a friend who’s come to stay for good and secondly because Ghana won against Serbia!

It felt really good. In addition, to these 2 pieces of good news, I’m aware of 4 for more Sierra Leoneans coming back from US for good…some have already enrolled their children in my kids school….very excited.

At the end of the day Sierra can only be developped by Sierra Leoneans…. and of course those of us married to them (ha..ha ha….)

On our way to Lakka beach 2 weeks ago, I noticed big improvement in the Penninsular Road. (I’ve got some picture to prove.) And that’s not the only one, a number of main roads are being fixed or have been fixed. penninslaoad1 For instance, I’m told the road to Bo is now pristine and the road to the Liberian boarder has also been graded with contract already awarded.

Business Registration In Sierra Leone - Part II

OK today, I’ve calmed down following my fury at the Business Registration Bureau in town. Now as I write this entry, I’ve been to this place a total of 10 times since my initial post about regisitering a business in Sierra Leone (click here to read Part I) and till today I’ve not completed eveything!

Remember, I don’t know anyone in this office and I’m not paying an bribes to push through my application. I just want to see how long it will take me and ordinary Joe who is in a similar situation.

Officially, it should take 1-3 business day to register a company, so far it taking me 10 working days, and 2x I’ve been asked blatantly for money by Mr. B (not putting full name here) who’s been dealing with my application. I know for a fact that it shouldn’t take this long because I have friends who recently (within the last 6 months) registered and they didn’t have the problem I’m having because they admitted they paid their way.

5 Things You Need When Relocating To Sierra Leone For Good

I’ve had some friends ask me this so I thought, I’ll put together a post for those of you wishing to come

moving-house

back home for good.

Now before I go on, in view of the dire health system here, I’ll advice anyone with chronic or serious illness which demands frequent hospital visits to stay where you are if you’re being looked after well. On the other hand if you have to come, you’ll need to find which hospitals and doctors you need to see here and perhaps arrange for your necessary medication to be sent to you from abroad. All is not lost!

Now let’s get into the 5 things you need stuff…
