Sierra Leone Up In The Peaceful Index

It’s official Sierra Leone is moving up in the world index of peaceful countries. Sierra Leone is No. 53rd out of 149 countries.

New Zealand tops the list as the most peaceful countries. In Africa only 7 countries are more peaceful than Sierra Leone! And they are(in order of most peaceful): Botswana, Tunisia, Mozambique,Ghana, Egypt, Zambia and Malawi.  I’m particularly proud of this fact as the war was not too long ago.

Check the Global Peace Index 2010 here

And also for me, I can walk the streets at night without feeling afraid as well as if your car broke down in the middle of no where, there will always be people to help!  For me that’s what matters.

Bravo Mama Salone! More good news coming……

Current State Of The Peninsular Road

As you know (unless you hiding under a rock) the peninsular road is being rebuilt and penrdoct2010012 when we used it last Sunday, we could see more progress such as nearly completed bridges (one can count over 20 bridges from Lumley to No."2!).

Work was started around April, but the debilitating rains forced a pause.  Here are some pictures. I pray and hope next time, I’ll be showing you tarred roads….

Slow Internet Is Such An Embarrassment

Talk about embarrassment ! I experienced some today quite frankly I had the “blushes” over an issue I can’t control – internet speed in Sierra Leone

I  was in a 3-way conference call with a client and an webhost and I needed to access the site of the webhost to fix something. Folks, it took me 4 minutes… and even that I wasn’t logged in properly. I mean 1 minute silence on the phone is bad enough but 4 minutes… wow that’s like an eternity, my goodness! To my other companions who are based in America, they must have thought I was in a village somewhere in the jungle…and it truly felt like that..

I’m So Excited….Lumley To Be Transformed

Today, I went out to Godridge and low and behold! the “big guns” were out! I mean the heavy road road-remake equipment were out clearing the busy road from Juba all the way to Lumley Police station! I’m sooooooo excited! I mean Lumley will look brilliant once the road gets a new makeover. And if they tackle and widen that bridge to Juba that will be even better!

I can hear the cynics like many who’ve told me how the “government hasn’t got the guts to do it”, “Oh they will loose the elections etc etc”. Nonsense!!!!

Corruption Perception Index 2009 – How’s Sierra Leone Fairing?

Since 1995, Transparency International has published an annual Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) ordering the countries of the world according to “the degree to which corruption is perceived to exist among public officials and politicians”. The organization defines corruption as “the abuse of entrusted power for private gain”

The higher a country’s score, the less corruption there is. New Zealand ranks No.1 overall with 9.4 points. For Africa, Botswana, ranking at No.37 with 5.6 points, is the least corrupted country (kudos to them) It’s worth of note that there is no African country in Top 36.

Everyday Mode Of Transport In Freetown

So how do we move about here in Sierra Leone? Bear in mind that the terrain here is mountainous. This is 4x4 Common Mode Of transportjust to enlighten you just in case you’re coming for good and want to buy a car.

I’ll talk about private car first:

The best mode of transport here is a 4×4 ;) simply because of the mountainous terrain and the bad roads. Other cars will do, but they’ll struggle to get to some places. I’ve seen that only non 4×4 that can weather things better here is the Mercedes.

My Taxi Ride Hell In Freetown Salone!

Have you ever taken a taxi in Sierra Leone? If so then you’ll probably understand this Taxi That Left Me On Spur Road 2incident that happened to me about two weeks ago, Nov 19th to be precise. We had taken the car to the garage and as usual, it was there for 4 days and it came back much worse than it went in.

Anyway, on the first day that it went, I decided to take a taxi to pick the children from school. This taxi was brought to me that truly looked like it was going to fall apart sooner than later.
